RAIN IN THE CITY

The clouds gather
it becomes a little dark
and you can read the worry
on people's faces
its just another day in Nairobi
but this one
the heavens fall
it begins drizzling
And people are almost
knocking one another down
they say "rain is a blessing"
but not to these city dwellers
but just like the coin has two sides
not all are crying
over there is Njoro
"ubrerra, ubrerra, na mia biri,
usinyeshewe, pata ubrerra"
(umbrella, umbrella, for 2 hundred,
don't be rained on, get an umbrella)
its a booming business today
furthermore no one bargained
the matatu touts are smiling
the bus fare they have hiked
It was twenty bob now it's seventy bob
the mat is full
yet people are fighting to get in
Maingi, a young man,
who has just got to the city
picks himself up
from the mud filled water paddle
thats the welcome he gets
karibu mjini ( welcome to the city).
